Wholesome Wave creates and fields nutrition security incentive programs for low-income Americans to purchase the fruits and vegetables their families need to be healthy. Co-founded in 2007 by Chef Michel Nischan and Gus Schumacher with funding from his former business partner, the late actor Paul Newman, Wholesome Wave is the national food equity non-profit that created a nutrition security movement, and successfully imbedded nutrition incentives in the Federal Farm Bill. The Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program doubles SNAP benefits when SNAP recipients use their benefits to purchase fruits and vegetables.
Wholesome Wave is now working with community based non-profits and Congress to embed their produce prescription concept into health policy.
